Maths, science teachers invited to Stellenbosch campus Maths, science teachers invited to SU campus

High school teachers giving mathematics, physical sciences or life sciences are invited to an inspirational and informative evening, at no cost, presented by the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University (SU) on 20 March on the Stellenbosch campus.

Maths and the physical sciences count among the compulsory subjects for university admission to most BSc programmes in the Faculties of Science, Health Sciences and Engineering at SU.

“Our country simply cannot go forward without the input of well-informed, inspiring teachers who motivate their learners to follow careers in the sciences, in the medical and technological fields of study and in engineering,” Prof Eugene Cloete, Dean of the Faculty of Science, believes. “They play an extremely important role in stimulating learners’ interests in these fields and in preparing and enabling them to add a tertiary qualification to their names.”

Prof Cloete, a leader in the field of water research and a respected motivational speaker, will be one of the speakers at the function.

The teachers will also be able to question a panel of SU experts on the latest trends in the teaching of chemistry, physics, maths and biology and on how learners’ results in maths and the physical sciences at school compare with their university achievements later.

SU’s new university admissions policy, according to which all study programmes will be subject to selection from 2013, and the various study programmes offered by the Faculty of Science in the mathematical, physical and biological sciences will be discussed.

The function will be held from 16:00 to 19:00 on 20 March in the JC Gericke library auditorium on the SU campus. Refreshments will be provided and admission will be free of charge.

Prizes

Life-changing prizes

A world-class science fair calls for world-class prizes. They include once-in-a-lifetime experiences like a scientific trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Explorer, unique scholarships and real-life work opportunities in iconic science centers of excellence like CERN in Switzerland.

New Science in Action prize

There’s also a special Science in Action prize, sponsored by Scientific American.

This is a special judges’ award for projects that champion scientific projects that make a practical difference in the lives of a group or community.

Judges

The Google Science Fair judging panel is an international team of scientific experts from a wide range of fields – from biology, physics and chemistry to computer science.

Learn about the judging criteria and meet the judges

Everyone has a question. What’s yours?

It could be a new take on particle physics, or game theory. It could be a cost-effective way to provide clean water to a remote community, or maybe a project like reducing the carcinogenic properties of grilled chicken (that was one of last year’s winning entries). It should definitely be inspired.

You might already have the beginnings of an idea. Or just be hungry to get involved. Either way, you have until 1 April 2012 to work on identifying your question and building your project.

Get started right now by registering and securing parental consent.

Open for 13 to 16 year olds.

Maverick thinkers are welcome not just straight A students.

SAILI scholars are advised to check this opportunity out.

Remembering Mike Bernardo

Mike Bernardo passed away yesterday (14 Feb 2012).

For many, he will be remembered as a tough guy, a fighter, who fought at the highest level.

At  SAILI, we found out about all that afterwards.

Mike came to us when one of our students needed psychological help. We had been ringing around frantically trying to get help and came across Mike. He had just finished his counselling training at the South African College for Applied Psychology and was prepared to help quickly and at no cost. Mike spent much of last year working with us.

We will remember Mike as a kind man who had time for those around him.

Rest in peace.

Message from christie.sj@gmail.com:
Students are invited to enter the letter writing competition being run by the South African Post Office. The prizes are significant both for the winners and their schools. This looks worth the effort and if one is clever about it , I am sure that the letter could be reused for a school assignment. Good luck

SAILI Matric results - More top performers added

It is our busiest time of the year right now. We have taken on 27 new students who have just started - many of them in schools we have not worked with before.

For the most part the office activities are pretty mundane at the moment. Uniforms, textbooks and stationery etc.

All of this swamps what should be a celebratory feeling that should accompany the 2011 SAILI student's matric results.

From our 17 matrics last year we can celebrate the following:

100 % pass rate
100 % bachelor's degree admission
100 % maths pass rate (average 76%)
100 % physics pass rate (average 66%) - This subject routinely has the lowest national pass rate and numbers taking it continue to decline.

Particular mention must go to our top achievers who together with their teachers and families have done themselves proud.
  • Anderson Chimpango 6 Distinctions including -Maths, Physics, Accountancy, Maths Paper 3
  • Waseem Basadien 5 Distinctions including -Maths, Physics, Economics, Engineering and Graphics Design,
  • Margaret Nkulu 3 Distintions including: Maths, Accountancy
  • Ashlee Prins 3 Distinctions including: Engineering and graphics design, Life sciences
  • Wendy Batyi 3 Distinctions including: Life Sciences, Afrikaans
  • Flavia Mulenga 3 Disticntions including: Afrikaans, Maths
  • Michael January 1 Distinction: Maths

We are extremely proud of our students.
Well done to you all.

A quick update from our Aquarium volunteer!

Mikhail Hendricks, Grade 10, was selected to partake in the Young Biologists course at the Aquarium recently, here is a brief update on his volunteering.

'I have started my volunteering at the Two Oceans Aquarium. I am really enjoying it. It is tiring though, I start at 9:00am & then I end at 6pm, but when I think of how I put a smile onto the kids faces then I just can't wait to go back. It really is amazing. That reminds me of a girl called Britney, she a 9 year old who suffered a severe stroke and is totally paralysed on the left side. When I gave her a starfish to touch, the look on her face was priceless.'

Well done Mikhail on spending your holidays on such good work.
