Maths and the physical sciences count among the compulsory subjects for university admission to most BSc programmes in the Faculties of Science, Health Sciences and Engineering at SU.
“Our country simply cannot go forward without the input of well-informed, inspiring teachers who motivate their learners to follow careers in the sciences, in the medical and technological fields of study and in engineering,” Prof Eugene Cloete, Dean of the Faculty of Science, believes. “They play an extremely important role in stimulating learners’ interests in these fields and in preparing and enabling them to add a tertiary qualification to their names.”
Prof Cloete, a leader in the field of water research and a respected motivational speaker, will be one of the speakers at the function.
The teachers will also be able to question a panel of SU experts on the latest trends in the teaching of chemistry, physics, maths and biology and on how learners’ results in maths and the physical sciences at school compare with their university achievements later.
SU’s new university admissions policy, according to which all study programmes will be subject to selection from 2013, and the various study programmes offered by the Faculty of Science in the mathematical, physical and biological sciences will be discussed.
The function will be held from 16:00 to 19:00 on 20 March in the JC Gericke library auditorium on the SU campus. Refreshments will be provided and admission will be free of charge.

Have you asked a question today? What did you do with it?
Did it take you somewhere new? Did it bring you here?
The Google Science Fair is an online science competition seeking curious minds from the four corners of the globe. Anybody and everybody between 13 and 18 can enter. All you need is an idea.
Geniuses are not always A-grade students. We welcome all mavericks, square-pegs and everybody who likes to ask questions. Simply upload your project here to win some life changing prizes.

Life-changing prizes
A world-class science fair calls for world-class prizes. They include once-in-a-lifetime experiences like a scientific trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Explorer, unique scholarships and real-life work opportunities in iconic science centers of excellence like CERN in Switzerland.New Science in Action prize
There’s also a special Science in Action prize, sponsored by Scientific American.
This is a special judges’ award for projects that champion scientific projects that make a practical difference in the lives of a group or community.
Judges
The Google Science Fair judging panel is an international team of scientific experts from a wide range of fields – from biology, physics and chemistry to computer science.
Everyone has a question. What’s yours?
It could be a new take on particle physics, or game theory. It could be a cost-effective way to provide clean water to a remote community, or maybe a project like reducing the carcinogenic properties of grilled chicken (that was one of last year’s winning entries). It should definitely be inspired.
You might already have the beginnings of an idea. Or just be hungry to get involved. Either way, you have until 1 April 2012 to work on identifying your question and building your project.
Get started right now by registering and securing parental consent.
Google Science Fair.
Open for 13 to 16 year olds.
Maverick thinkers are welcome not just straight A students.
SAILI scholars are advised to check this opportunity out.

Students are invited to enter the letter writing competition being run by the South African Post Office. The prizes are significant both for the winners and their schools. This looks worth the effort and if one is clever about it , I am sure that the letter could be reused for a school assignment. Good luck
It is our busiest time of the year right now. We have taken on 27 new students who have just started - many of them in schools we have not worked with before.
